An Internet company under fire for homophobic censorship has backed down in the face of concerted pressure from queer activists.

December last year saw the formation of a Welsh LGB Working Party to resolve how best to use the funding offered by Stonewall to help develop a Welsh LGB Forum. The meeting at the Assembly was between Edwina Hart AM, of the Equality of Opportunity Policy Unit, Angela Mason of Stonewall, and 5 reps of South Walian LGB groups, and one from the North Wales Lesbian Line. Representation was increased at the second meeting in February, with 3 North Walians and representatives from Mid and West Wales. The next meeting in April will draw up a bid to the Assembly for funding.

NWLL TO PRODUCE SAME-SEX-SUPPORT-SERVICES BOOKLET

NWLL have received funding from the National Lottery Charities Board, the Welsh Language Board, Denbighshire Sexuality Project and LAGIM union to produce a bilingual Same-Sex-Support-Services Booklet listing all the LGB support services available in Wales.This will be distributed throughout the libraries, colleges, doctor's surgeries etc. for isolated LGBs to access. UK.GAY.COM TO HOST UK LESBIAN LINES WEBSITE

UK.Gay.Com are to design and host the first website to detail all the Lesbian helplines & Support groups in the UK & Ireland. A recent survey by NWLL showed that the Lesbian Lines were all valiantly operating on little resources and few volunteers. This website will make the Lesbian Lines and Support services more accessible, aid networking, and hopefully lead to better funding prospects for us all. THE LESBIAN & GAY CENSUS

This summer ID Research will be conducting the first ever lesbian and gay census throughout the whole of the UK.
It will be the largest and most comprehensive piece of social and market research of the UK's lesbian and gay population that has ever been undertaken in this country.
Currently there is very little known about the lesbian and gay population and the National Census 2001 will be attempting to address this issue by including relationship status between all members of the household - but if you don't live with your partner, your sexuality will again, ignored.The National Census 2001 will therefore grossly under represent YOU and ensure that WE remain invisible.
If there is no data, there is no gay population. We can be ignored, discriminated against and forgotten.
The Gay and Lesbian Census will help us to understand how we contribute to society, what influences our lives and lifestyle choices, and how our experiences shape the world around us.The census is for you.
So make your voice heard and stand up and be counted. SO, if you are lesbian or gay and you want to be part of the Census, call to register your name and address for the Census Questionnaire to be sent to you (they must be returned in August)

An Internet company under fire for homophobic censorship has backed down in the face of concerted pressure from queer activists.
V21.co.uk, which claims to offer 'safe surfing' was found to be switching words in users e-mails, substituting 'girl' for lesbian, 'friend' for 'gay' and 'man' for homosexual. Transgender campaigner, Dani Jackson, launched an Internet call for the LGBT community to protest the company's policy, arguing that their supposed screening for 'lewd and rude' content revealed "ridiculous censorship, rooted in homophobia". The company further enraged activists by initially trying to defend its actions with claims that its 'protected' email system was "really for the use of children". Jackson blasted V21's assertion that it was 'protecting' young people as "echoing the narrow-mindedness of Section 28. Their implication that the words 'lesbian' or 'gay' represent adult content is simple bigotry." Activists stepped up their calls on the company to scrap its homophobic policies and offer an apology . On Monday 16th July, the company announced a reversal. Spokesperson Mike Hall explained: "As the use of gay and lesbian seems to be such a big problem for ... your community we have decided to change these words to standard use.
